Let’s talk about one of my favorite things, beauty products! I am a hairstylist and makeup artist by trade, so switching out personal care products has been the hardest for me. I feel most of the natural products I have tried don’t give me the same results as the conventional toxic ones. But is it really worth putting all of those toxic chemicals on my body everyday?
Did you know that women were found to use an average of 12-16 beauty products a day? That is close to 200 chemicals that are being absorbed by the body daily! These chemicals include formaldehyde, coal tar, and heavy metals. All of which are very common in beauty products. The scary part is that it is still unknown how these chemicals interact with the body once they are absorbed by the skin.
Making your own face serums, moisturizers, and face toners are a great alternative! Or even going to health food stores such as Whole Foods to find “better-for-you” products.
My favorite website, ewg.org, has a database called Skin Deep, where you are able to check the scores of your cosmetics and personal care products. It has ratings that go from “1” (the best) to “10” (the worst). My first big switch was finding a better body lotion. I read that if there’s one thing you should switch out, it should be the things that you are using on large areas of your body. Products like soap and body lotion. I switched out my old moisturizer for Alba Very Emollient Body Cream. It doesn’t have a perfect rating, but it only rated a “3” which isn’t too bad. I am still in the process of switching out old toxic products, because I’m having a hard time finding “cleaner” ones that work just as well. I will update the blog if I find products I like. I would love recommendations if you have a product you love!
