Let’s talk hormones, specifically, “endocrine disruptors”. You may have heard the term, but do you know what they are and what they can do? Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that interfere with the endocrine system (aka our hormones). Both men and women have hormones and can both be effected by them.
So how do they chemicals mess with our hormones?
Endocrine disruptors can disrupt or alter the function of hormones in the body by attaching to hormone receptors and blocking hormones from binding. They can also increase and decrease certain hormones, and interfere with how our hormones and receptors are controlled.
The side effects from these chemicals can cause many health issues in animals and humans including, reproductive, developmental, neurological and immune issues. Endocrine disruptors can be especially harmful during pregnancy, developmental years, and lactation. Studies have shown that these chemicals can lower fertility, increase the risk of some cancers and lead to endometriosis.
