Ditch and Switch

Non-toxic cleaning products

After reading books on toxins years ago, I started to buy “cleaner” products and foods. My goal was to switch over to a less toxic lifestyle, but somehow I reverted back to buying toxic conventional products over the years. Part of that had to do with cost and the other part was convenience. I was going to expensive health food stores like Whole Foods Market every week and buying everything I needed there, whether it was expensive or not. My husband thought I was spending a ridiculous amount of money each week, so I agreed to go to a “regular” grocery store. Unfortunately, Vons didn’t carry the products I liked. They had some “greener” options so I opted for those knowing very well they were not much better than conventional cleaning and personal care products.

Why?

I have to admit that I just got used to using those toxic products again and didn’t care. I had lost my passion for living a “clean, toxic-free” lifestyle. I had also lost my passion for being healthy.

What changed?

As silly as this may sound, I got introduced to Young Living Essential Oils. I have been using essential oils for years but refused to get on the Young Living bandwagon. I was not a supporter of MLM’s and I thought I would never be. My sister-in-law was always posting about them but I didn’t see how they were any better than the ones from Whole Foods and Sprouts. I finally gave in and got a starter kit (only because I wanted to help my sister-in-law hit a goal for the month). I was reluctant and I thought it was over-priced. Most of all I hated that it was an MLM.

What did I gain from it?

I gained back my love for healthy living. I would have never imagined something as silly as an essential oil kit could have done that. Surprisingly, the more I learned about the products and the company, the more I got my passion back. First off, I want to say that I did buy the kit to sell the oils. I bought it for personal use and to get the wholesale discount. Little did I know, that it came with a wonderful support system and education. Most of what they teach I already knew, but it was nice to have a refresh on the things I once cared about. Seeing these people so passionate about the products made me start to become passionate about the toxic-free lifestyle again.
